 Are you ready to Zoom??

 Zoom Like a Pro | 2020-03-30 | Walls & Ceilings?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good day/evening Members!

While our theaters are closed, the show (our meetings) must go on!

Our executive board has been HIGHLY advised by IATSE that we do not hold union meetings meet in person for the rest of this year due to the threat of COVID-19 and social distancing orders. That said, we will have virtual executive board and general membership meetings. Our Q2 & 3 General Business meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 3rd, 2020.

I will post the agenda to our web site once it is finalized. Some members of the executive board will be virtually attending the abbreviated two-day virtual live convention July 28-29. International 2020 Mid-Summer Virtual General Executive Board Meeting!  Part of our agenda will include highlights and important information we will know regarding 2020 dues payments and other pertinent business as it relates to Local B-4 duties and obligations.

One of those obligations is to still hold elections. This year’s cycle for office terms of election our Secretary and Member At-Large. I am pleased to inform you that our incumbents, Florence Lewis and Sue Epstein have decided to rerun for their offices of Secretary and Member A-t Large, respectively. If anyone else is interested in running for either office, please submit your nomination to your Shop Steward. I will appoint an election chair / committee as the date comes closer.  The executive board will be discussing the possibility of using an electric ballot software program in lieu of mailed ballots. More to come on that. Any opponent will have their opportunity to submit e-flyers or paper flyers that will be posted to our web site. Voting will take place as part of our meeting on August 3rd.

Here are a couple of Zoom tutorials. You can use a smartphone, tablet or laptop or computer to participate. For those of you who do not want to bother with learning new technology, there will also be a call-in number.  I encourage all of you to familiarize yourselves with Zoom. Google search it, download it. It's great not only for business, but also in your family and social lives in these trying times of social distancing and pandemic.  Any verbiage in color below is a web link that takes you to that site or topic via a web browser.

Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video. Zoom users can choose to record sessions, collaborate on projects, and share or annotate on one another's screens, all with one easy-to-use platform.

By OLMS regulations, we are obligated to continue to hold meetings and elections (see attached communication from the IA Legal Dept).

I know this is going to be a challenge for us all, and our membership. And change from the way we do business as usual.  It will be rocky at first, but we will get the hang of it. Many of us have already become familiar with Zoom meetings on a social level and it is easy once you get the hang of it.

Our jobs as Ushers may be very different in the new normal when live theater resumes. I can see the handwriting on the wall. They will limit our touching of any surfaces in any ways they can, including Playbills!  More electronic gadgets might be introduced. We need to stay ahead of the curve and anticipate changes to anything thrown at us. Now is the time we must do our due diligence to dive into the technology of the millenniums.  It cannot be avoided if we want to continue our employment in the jobs we so love. The more adept we get to using technological apps and devices, the more valuable we will be. We need to creatively think of new ways we can sell our employers for protecting our patrons and one another against germs and viruses.

I will be happy to try my best to guide you and answer any question(s) you may have no matter how ignorant you may feel they are. Please review the updated agenda and I will be in touch soon.  I am also enlisting the aid of Jen Kolucki, who uses Zoom all the time at her day job.
