Community Outreach Request for Veterans
Posted On: May 08, 2018

Dear Union Member,

In an effort to involve us in more community outreach and camaraderie, I have appointed Robin Jones, our Vice-President, to help spearhead us in this direction and activity.  By coincidence, one of our Members, Robert Morrissette, Staff at BOH, approached me recently, to suggest such an organization who could use our help.  The New England Center and Home for Veterans offers services in education, support, employment and housing.

I thought we might ask union members to contribute gift cards to the Center for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. Below is information from the website. Though it mentions this particularly for the holiday season, I'm sure they could use a replenishment of whatever cards they received last Christmas. In consequence, it was unanimously voted at our Q2 General Membership Business Meeting to ask our union to become involved.  All that would be needed would be for members to purchase a gift card at a store and we could have one person at each house collect them to present for Memorial Day.  Robin will work in tandem with the Shop Stewards and Robert to help us meet our may 20, 2018 gift card collection goal. Below is a message from the Center and Home for Veterans CJ Beck, Philanthropic Officer of Community Engagement:

As a bit of background as to how we use gift cards, many of the Veterans who are moving out into new apartments do not always have the funds necessary to supply themselves with items for their new apartments – kitchen utensils, cleaning supplies, bathroom/kitchen products – and we use gift cards from places like TJX/Marshalls and Target to help them with this transition.  We also use the same cards, along with other clothing stores, to help Veterans purchase items like shoes.  I actually just received a request for a gift card for shoes the other week from a Veteran’s case manager.

Gift cards to coffee and food stores are also great.  The food stores are used for Veterans moving out of the Center and for those who live in the permanent apartments, living on small budgets.  Coffee is always good as I would say the vast majority of our residents enjoy coffee – especially Dunkin Donuts!

I very much look forward to working with you.  Thank you again for your support of the NECHV and Veterans.

Thank you for your part in helping us make this community outreach and involvement endeavor a success,

In Solidarity, The Executive Board of IATSE Local B4 (Jim, Robin, Carol, Florence, Marilyn and Sue)
